Bringing the mind and body together, Pilates works the stabilizing muscles of the body building a girdle of strength between the rib cage and the pelvis. This girdle of strength helps to protect the spine, particularly through the low back area.

Q3 Is Pilates suitable for everyone?

Normally Pilates is suitable for all age groups and fitness levels. If you have a condition or injury which can affect your ability to exercise, you should check with your GP before commencing.

Q4 Is Pilates safe?

Pilates is especially recommended by most health professionals as a safe form of exercise. Check with your GP first if you have any concerns.

Q5 Will Pilates help me to lose weight?

Generally the most successful way to lose weight is by combining exercise with a suitable diet. Pilates helps to tone and strengthen your muscles. It can also improve your posture and energy levels.

Q6 Can I learn Pilates from a book or DVD?

To get the most out of Pilates you are almost always better to find a well trained teacher. Later you could use a book or DVD to compliment your studio sessions.

Q7 What should I wear?

You should wear clothing that allows freedom of movement. A tracksuit bottom and T- shirt, a leotard tank top or shorts are all suitable.

Q8 Do I need to do any other exercise?

You should probably add some cardio vascular exercise to your weekly programme such as swimming or walking.
